Background

Dota 2 isn’t just a game — it’s one of the biggest esports in the world.

Its championship, The International, holds the record for the highest prize pool in esports history — over $40 million. The tournament scene fuels the community, defines the meta, and inspires millions of players globally.

As a fan and player, I wanted one thing: A place to track my stats, follow pro players, check match history with friends, and stay updated on the competitive scene — all in one app.

But before 2021, nothing brought those worlds together. Everything was scattered across different platforms. That’s why I built Dotastatz to bring it all into one place.

The Challenge

I knew what I wanted to build — an app made by a Dota player, for the Dota community.

But the first challenge was obvious: Where do I even get all this data?

So I started researching. I found public APIs from OpenDota, Liquipedia, and Stratz — each holding a piece of the puzzle.

But then came the harder part: How do you take millions of raw data points — match records, player stats, team rankings, tournament brackets and turn it into something simple, insightful, and empowering?

That’s where design came in. I used everything I’d learned from self-taught coding and software agency experience to bring it to life.

The Opportunity

Dota has one of the richest open data ecosystems in gaming.
